Without a doubt, picking the OAP's on radio with the most popular Locally Acquired Foreign Accent has been an immense task on the Grapevine Team.
We've already been blasted thoroughly by some and others are, well, 'Lafaaing' it out. Either way, this award is just to recognise the effort of every individual who has put in so much effort into acquiring this accent....we say Kudos because it ain't easy.
NUMBER 5

Ifedayo Olarinde |
Freeze, aka Daddy Freeze, aka Freeze Cool Fm, came into radio limelight when Cool Fm held the radio waves down with almost no competition.
Now we know he is half oyinbo but does that warrant his accent?
Freeze is a graduate of the University of Ibadan, born in Osun state and father of 2 very beautiful kids (his wife is Hella pretty as well). Freeze started out on radio in 1996 with BCOS Ibadan but later joined cool FM in 2001 till date making it 17 years of radio presenting with some TV work thrown in as well.
Freeze is also half Romanian (which accounts for the only 'onyinboness') bet is the accent that Freeze uses a Romanian accent??? To his credit though, Freeze has kind'a reduced his phonee since he got cut at the cord from Olisa and we prefer him without the phonee abi?
NUMBER 4
|
Lydia Olarenwaju aka pHisayo |
#InDoctorAlban'sVoice Hello Phisayo tell us where you got your accent from.
Again another member of Smooth FM joins the gang of the L.A.F.A Nominees, Phisayo holds down the Kasbah on the afternoon shifts and the music selection is EPIC... as well as the accent (Forged in the mountains of Mordor... one accent to rule them all, my precious).
Olufisayo is a poet/songwriter/singer and broadcaster who has been working on TV and radio for a while although she came into the limelight most recently when she joined the Smooth Fm team.
Getting info on pHisayo was like digging into the Archives of hell because we found NOTHING right next to the "Great Fire-Wall of pHisayo," but thank you Linkedin and POW!! We got our info!
Her real name is Lydia and she attended the Moshood Abiola Poly in Abeokuta then there on to IMT in Enugu. So Lydia, which ABA sales man convinced you to change this accent to what it is now?
Na ask we dey ask oh! But mostly... we are in love with it as it stands out as one of the very best on Lagos Radio.
NUMBER 3
|
Joyce Odichinma Onyemuwa |
Another leading lady in the pack of Locally Acquired Foreign Accents is Joyce who hosts the night cafe on Cool FM along side N6, the votes in for this young lady where quite 'amany' and we will unravel this joyce-ful mystery.
A “pint sized” broadcaster, Joyce Odichinma Onyemuwa has been in radio for over five years starting out at Brila Fm, and is an avid music lover and pianist. She is presently an undergraduate at the University of South Africa but since she still has a job in Lagos, we will assume it is a distance learning course??
Joyce grew up majorly in Surulere, she attended Amazing Grace Primary school, Surulere and then on to Gbaja Girls Secondary School for secondary education. After this she went to the Nigerian Institute of Phonee Speaking some where in... (If we knew all Lagos go speak phonee, so let's keep that secret) where she acquired this delicious accent with robust "R's" she uses to mesmerize listeners.
Joyce we love you. And we hope when you're done at The University of South Africa you will have picked up a new accent ... preferably South African.
NUMBER 2
|
Dotun Kayode |
Born in 1984 in Lagos State, Dotun's first love apprently isn't even Taiwo but Dance. His skills as a dancer eventually landed him in popular music videos for some A-list artistes such as D’Banj and DJ Zeez and the rest, they say, is history.
Hold up! (Wait a minute!), we have not discussed the accent.
Dotun studied Mass Communications at the the Lagos State University (LASU) and Advertising and Public Relations; and his foray into Radio began when he started off as an intern in Cool FM in Lagos.
So now we're here, abeg, plixt help me check it... How did this young man land this powerful accent that keeps his microphone flooded??? (and we mean... FLOODED)
Well, all mysteries aren't meant to be solved I guess but i'm sure being married into the Oyebanjo family will help at least when D'banj returns from seeing Kanye & Kim, he'll probably bring some accent back to share to everyone. #JustSaying
AND FINALLY OUR NUMBER 1 LOCALLY ACQUIRED FOREIGN ACCENT WINNER IS OFCOURSE...
|
Toke Makinwa |
Love her or Hate her, Ms Makinwa is definately doing something right!
Since her entrance into radio in 2010, Toke has been on the rise and has just finished shooting her 2nd TV Commercial (all rise and clap please, because alot of OAPs can't boast of this). Probably the most photographed OAP on every red carpet (at every event), Toke is definitely something special.
Her Video Blogs are funny, witty and sometimes downright nasty but we just love to see her made up face every opportunity we get (which is VERY often by the way). BUT... WHERE DID THAT ACCENT COME FROM??????
Toke attended FGGC Oyo and then University of Lagos and most of her peers can testify that even in school Ms. Makinwa had been mastering this Accent (we are impressed) but kai, the Accent heavy sha.
Ms Makinwa, reduce am small naa, beter yet tell us where you got this #WinningAccent from so we can quickly purchase our own and maybe, just maybe we can rise as well. *sob*
____________________________________________
Ok people thats the the list and again we are making fun of ourselves here as OAPs, no beef or 'Hate' (Nigerian celebs love that word sha #Osi_Suave).
Being a successful On Air Personality doesn't have to do with how thick your accent is but how articulate and smart you sound (In our Opinion of course).
